Teeth Whitening Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions about laser teeth whitening At Dublin Vitality Centre, we have been providing 1 hour teeth whitening for over a decade. Here are some of the questions that we are asked about our fabled teeth whitening treatment.

Who should NOT whiten their teeth?

This answer may vary, but at Dublin Vitality Centre we dont offer teeth whitening to the following:
  • You are pregnant or nursing (consult with your doctor first).
  •  You have loose teeth, loose fillings, cavities, or gum disease.
  •  You have not visited a dentist in over a year
  • You are under 18 years old (with written consent of adult only
  • You are allergic to any listed ingredient
  • You have cavities in the front teeth. Go to your dentist.

Can teeth whitening harm the tooth's enamel?

No, not with the new non peroxide treatments anyway. This process will penetrate the tooth enamel but will not damage the enamel. Clients comment that laser teeth whitening is relaxing and pleasant at Dublin Vitality Center where we use aromatherapy oils and music to ensure you are relaxed and comfortable. Laser teeth whitening is used by thousands of dentists and clinicians all over the world. Enamel erosion is caused by two main factors. Time and frequency of exposure to acids such as non-milk-extrinsic sugars. .Laser teeth whitening takes less than 1 hour and does not expose the teeth to acids, therefore harming factors do not apply.

What occurs during whitening?

There is no magic. Well maybe a little. During the teeth whitening process, the active ingredient in the laser teeth whitening gel is broken down to water and oxygen, oxygen enters the tooth enamel. This whitens embedded discolored substances (stains). The structure of the tooth is not changed; only the tooth enamel stain is changed and becomes a lighter and whiter shade.

How long will it take until my teeth are whiter?

Usually one session, but do consider having a second one. Some people need it. The whitening effect will depend on the natural colour of your teeth. Some people’s teeth are more cream coloured than white. For most people the desired teeth whitening result will be achieved after just one treatment. Whitening results become apparent during the first treatment. Heavily stained teeth may require additional treatments. Typically, the whitening effect becomes even more evident after a second treatment. Teeth will continue to whiten with each successive treatment until desired results are achieved in most cases.

What are the results for most people?

Although results vary, in our experience, 90% to 95% of people experience excellent levels of whitening in 60 minutes. We have experienced up to 8 shades in one 12 minute whitening procedure.A professional shade guide is used to record your teeth colour before and then after laser teeth whitening to show you the number of shades your teeth have whitened so you can see the improvement for yourself.

How long do results last?

For most people, the results are long lasting. Exposure to coffees, teas, tobacco, red wines and certain other stain producing substances will eventually darken teeth again over time. It is recommended to use a whitening tooth paste to maintain the teeth whitening colour.

Will fillings and crowns be affected by the whitening?

While teeth whitening will have no negative effect on the integrity of fillings or crowns, the simple fact is that these materials will not whiten in any type of teeth whitening procedure. They will however return to the colour they were originally. The same goes for composites, bridges, and veneers. Please consult your dentist.

Are there any side effects?

Not likely. On some occasions, you may feel a little tingling or perhaps a slight sensitivity. Teeth and/or gums may be sensitive for a short time after treatment. You may see temporary bleaching to the gums but this is normal and will disappear, usually in less than a day.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes, it is completely safe, the light operates in a narrow wavelength range of the gentle blue spectrum and is perfectly safe for teeth and gums. There are no harmful UV or IR rays in this Diode light source. People with tooth decay and with any type of gum disease should avoid this treatment because we do prefer that you get a clearance with your dentist.
